Check out our new Castle Couple, Christina and Jason!

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

Christina and Jason’s wedding day began with them waking up to a beautiful Northern Michigan day. They were pleased to find out they would be able to hold their wedding outside at Castle Farms in the Queen’s Courtyard, with a reception following in the East Garden Room.

Christina and Jason did a wonderful job at making their wedding one to remember. By using the list of Preferred Service Providers, they were able to choose an amazing vendor team. Chello’s Salon & Day Spa styled Christina’s hair, as well as that of all the bridesmaids. The beautiful floral bouquets were provided by A Touch of Spring; they were amazing! Ed Remaly officiated the ceremony, and guests were treated to a tasty dinner from BJ’s Restaurant, Rentals & Catering. Following dinner the scrumptious cake created by Celebration Cake Design was cut and served. Photography by Paxton Photography captured every moment, making Christina and Jason’s Castle wedding a day to be long remembered by both the couple and their guests.

How-To: Make Your Own Dessert Stands

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

Trying to cost down on wedding costs? One of the new trends we’re noticing brides choosing is to treat their guest to an elaborate dessert table instead of a large lavish cake. Brides are also choosing to have a variety of smaller cakes, rather than just one. There are lots of creative ways to display numerous cakes and desserts, but one idea we particularly love is to stagger cake stands of different heights. Let your imagination go wild!

Here’s one quick easy example. Let’s say you’re planning an outdoor wedding. Why not use birch bark to pick up on the rustic theme? Since birch trees are beautiful and native to Northern Michigan, this makes a great visual image for a Michigan wedding. Combining these two aspects is super easy and inexpensive. Simply follow the steps below and you’re on your way to making some awesome Birch Cake Stands!

1. This is the most important step and may be most difficult, too. You will need to find a birch tree which is already blown over and on the ground! Do not attempt to cut down a live birch tree, as some are on the endangered and protected species list. If you live in Northern Michigan, you may have an easier time finding a downed birch tree. If you don’t live near a wooded area, ask your family and friends if they have a place in Northern Michigan where you might find a birch tree already on the ground.

2. Use a saw to cut the tree into various heights, such as 4, 6 and 8 inches. It’s entirely up to you, depending on how high or low you want your cake stands to be. Be sure and cut enough pieces for all the stands you need.

3. *Purchase a clear sealer at your local hardware store. Apply thin coats to both the top and bottom of the birch logs.

*This step is optional. If you plan using these cake stands after your wedding, we highly recommend applying a sealer for preservation.

Birch cake stands

Voila! Bravo, you! With just a few simple steps, you’ve created awesome cake stands to use on your big day. Hopefully you had fun doing this project, and best of all, it’s basically free! Not only will these unique cake stands add a great touch to your wedding, they’ll be a treasured keepsake to use in your home forever following the wedding.

A Castle Wedding in the Making: Entry 7 - Caterer’s at Kelly’s Wedding

Sunday, May 13th, 2012

Hi there, it’s Peggy, popping in again. I went grocery shopping last night, which naturally got me thinking about food, and then I started thinking about the food we’re serving at Kelly and James’ wedding at Castle Farms on June 30th. So, I thought maybe you’d be interested in hearing about the caterers we’re working with and how we chose the menu items. If you read my blog about chocolate amaretto cake, you know how much I love to cook. But a birthday cake is one thing. Cooking for my daughter’s wedding? No, thank you! Time to call in the professionals. Which is exactly what we did and how we ended up with two of the most experienced and sought-after caterers in Northern Michigan for Kelly and James’ dinner reception and Day-After-The-Wedding brunch.

Lucky for us, Castle Farms has a wonderful Preferred Service Providers List. I know bridal couples find it a big help in searching for vendors. While visiting The Castle’s Gift Shop, they often mention to me that they have a ‘tasting’ appointment scheduled for later that day. At “tasting” sessions, restaurants provide different foods to sample from the catering menu. But Kelly and James opted out of any tasting sessions. Here’s their story.

We needed two caterers for Kelly and James’ wedding: one for the dinner reception and another for the Day-After-Wedding brunch. Choosing the caterer for the reception was easy. The business has an excellent reputation, we dine there often, they catered Kelly’s high school graduation party, plus the owners are good friends. Luckily, they were available on June 30th. We immediately booked the date. It wasn’t difficult choosing the caterer for the Day-After-Wedding Brunch, either. We know the owner well, and this business is often on-site at The Castle handling events. Their food is delicious, and we knew our out-of-town guests would appreciate being able to relax and enjoy the casual Day-After-Wedding brunch they’ll provide.

Both our caterers are listed on The Castle’s list of Preferred Service Providers. They’ve been great to work with, and they’ve offered wonderful suggestions about how to deal with vegans on the guest list, plus gluten free meals. The Preferred Service Providers at Castle Farms are all hand-picked. Not only do they provide high quality performance and exceed expectations, but they’re also experienced in working at Castle Farms. The reception rooms at The Castle do have kitchens with catering areas, but there are no cooking facilities. All cooking is done outside (either in catering trailers or at the restaurant, and then delivered in warming ovens) so as not to damage the historic stonework of The Castle. That’s one reason that The Castle’s Preferred Service Provider List is so important—especially when it comes to catering. Our preferred caterers are familiar with our facility and have the necessary equipment.

Wedding guests at Kelly and James’ Knights’ Castle dinner reception will be treated to appetizers and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a delicious plated dinner featuring pork tenderloin and beef, potatoes, green beans and fresh garden salad. The following morning, we’re planning a buffet style brunch in The Queen’s Tavern from 10 am–12 noon featuring lots of yummy breakfast items. After brunch, depending on our out-of-town guests’ schedules, we may even offer a guided tour of Castle Farms. I’ve seen it done before with other bridal parties who host a Day-After-Wedding brunch followed by a guided tour. Guests are always thrilled since it gives them an opportunity to see the entire Castle beyond the rooms where the ceremony and reception took place, plus learn its rich history. And for me, as Mother-of-The-Bride and someone who has the privilege of working at Castle Farms as Gift Shop and Tour Director, I’m delighted we’re able to provide our out-of-town visitors with wonderful memories of this beautiful Castle. It’s the perfect happily-ever-after ending for Kelly and James’ wedding guests!

A Castle Wedding in the Making: Entry 6 - The Cake

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Hi there! It’s me, Peggy, popping in again. If you’ve been following my posts, you know that the big day for Kelly and James’ wedding here at Castle Farms is quickly approaching. I’m trying my best to work with Kelly to make sure all the details are taken care of well in advance of June 30th so we can relax and enjoy the festivities!

One of the things I love about my job here at Castle Farms (I’m the Castle’s Gift Shop and Tour Director) is witnessing the excitement on wedding days. It’s so much fun watching as boxes of colorful decorations arrive, the florist delivers gorgeous bouquets, and finally… the topping glory of it all (besides the bride, naturally)… the wedding cake!

James likes cupcakes. Pudding cupcakes are his favorite. Kelly likes cake. She was hoping for a cake that she and James could cut during their reception while posing for photos. She even knew the exact flavor of the cake she wanted: chocolate amaretto.

Now, you have to understand that chocolate amaretto cake is somewhat of a family tradition that I started long ago. I bake that particular kind of cake for all our family birthdays. Yes, it’s expensive and time-consuming, but everyone in our family agrees it’s absolutely delicious. Both Kelly and her brother Kevin always insist on chocolate amaretto cakes for their birthdays. Once I didn’t make it for Kelly and she was so disappointed. Believe me, I learned my lesson! One year, after Kelly already had graduated from college and moved to Seattle, I flew out to visit her for Mother’s Day. Her birthday was still some months away, but since I knew we couldn’t be there to celebrate with her, I thought it would be nice if I baked Kelly her favorite cake. She loved it! So naturally, when it came time to making a decision about the wedding cake, the discussion about pudding cupcakes vs. a traditional wedding cake was a “sweet dilemma”.

In the end, Kelly and James decided to compromise. Together they came up with the perfect solution: James will have his pudding cupcakes, and Kelly is getting her chocolate amaretto cake. They’re working with one of the cake designers featured on The Castle’s Preferred Service Providers list… a bubbly happy lady who is here at The Castle for numerous weddings and who specializes in (believe it or not!) pudding cupcakes as well as (you guessed it!) chocolate amaretto cakes! I’m so happy at the way everything turned out. Compromise is a wonderful way to start—and sustain—a successful marriage. By compromising about the wedding cake, Kelly and James are off to a delicious start on their happily-ever-after.

A Castle Wedding in the Making – Entry 5: Mother Of The Bride Dress

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Hi there! It’s me, Peggy, popping in again. We’re now at Minus 4 months and counting ‘til the big day arrives… June 30th, the day our daughter Kelly and her fiancé James are being married here at Castle Farms in Charlevoix. I’m proud to be a member of the Castle Farms staff and I love my position as Gift Shop and Tour Director. And with so many weddings here at the Castle, I’m thrilled to finally be Mother-Of-The-Bride!

In my last blog, I told you about shopping for Kelly’s wedding dress. This time, I thought I’d share my experience about shopping for the dress I’ll be wearing when my husband Dennis walks our Kelly down the aisle. I knew I wanted something subtle yet sophisticated, and I’ve been looking for just the right dress ever since Kelly and James announced their engagement. I love shopping local, but unfortunately, I still hadn’t found the dress of my dreams by the time Dennis and I boarded our plane and headed out west for a family Christmas in Seattle. Big city, big stores! Surely I would find the perfect dress.

Kelly and I went to a large mall which featured a famous upscale department store. I headed immediately for the Nicer Dresses section. The saleswoman who worked with me was extremely helpful and encouraged me to try on a variety of different dresses. One of them was absolutely perfect but the store only had it in black, and I’m not about to wear black to my daughter’s wedding! No worries, the saleswoman assured me. The dress came in three other colors. She quickly wrote up the order for the same dress in my size in all three colors, which she promised they would ship to our house in Michigan. I could try them on in the comfort of my own home, decide which color worked best for me and my skin tone, then return the other two dresses… all with free shipping! Sold! I hauled out my credit card.

But naturally, there’s more to the story (you know how we women can be). The next day, Kelly and I just happened to be at a different mall (Seattle truly is a shopping mecca of the northwest!). Since we were already there, we decided to take advantage of the opportunity and ventured into another fashionable department store… where I discovered another dress which perfectly matched the color scheme of Kelly’s wedding. Unfortunately, the dress didn’t come in my size. No problem, the saleswoman said. They could ship the dress in two different sizes to my home address in Michigan where I could determine which one fit best. It was hard to resist. I loved the dress, and they’d offered me the same enticing offer which the other store had that clinched the deal: free shipping.

Dennis and I literally beat the five dresses home by mere days. After trying them all on and modeling them for Dennis, I eventually picked the one I’ll be wearing to Kelly’s wedding. Then I shipped the others back. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. The dresses were all very reasonably priced, and who can argue when it comes to free shipping? Certainly not me, and certainly not Dennis. I found a real beauty of a bargain while shopping in Seattle. A few of our area salons had gorgeous dresses, but they would have had to be ordered and couldn’t be returned. So in the end, my Seattle shopping excursion turned out to be the very best deal. Things are looking up! Kelly has her bridal gown and I have my Mother-of-The-Bride dress. And as for Dennis? Men have it easy. He’s wearing a tux.

How-To: Chalkboard Seating Card Display

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

In the “Do It Yourself (“DIY”) Weddings!” post, a chalkboard seating card display was shown. Creating a chalkboard seating display is quite simple and adds a great aspect to your reception. Interested? Follow the steps below and you’ll be on your way to your own unique seating card display.

  1. Find a wood board (try your local hardware or lumber yard) or something with a smooth surface.
  2. Purchase chalkboard paint or spray paint from your local hardware or craft shop.
  3. Prep the surface of your seating card display by making sure all dirt or dust is wiped clean.
  4. Paint or spray paint your seating card surface. Make sure you apply a nice even coat throughout.
  5. If you wish, add a second coat for more luster.
  6. Make your seating card display unique! It’s easy to do simply by adding a cool vintage picture frame around the edge, or including molding on the outside to give the appearance of a frame. Even just a piece of wood can be cut into a cool and distinctive shape.
  7. Use chalk to write guests’ names on the seating card display. You can do this in two ways. Either write the table number with the guests’ name at each table, or list them alphabetically with the table number displayed beside each name.

When it comes to creating your own seating card display, the options are endless. Best of all, the savings can really add up, since most of the items used in making a seating card display can be found at garage sales and thrift stores. Extra cash in your pocket = more to spend on the honeymoon!

A Castle Wedding in the Making – Entry 4: Special Touches

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Hi there! It’s me again, Peggy, mother-of-the-bride. Less than three months to go before the big day when Kelly and her fabulous fiancé James walk down the aisle on June 30th here at Castle Farms. Since Kelly and James live in Seattle, seeing to many of the wedding details has fallen on my shoulders. But my work at Castle Farms helps keeps me in the loop with the latest wedding trends, and The Castle event coordinators have been wonderful in making suggestions that have helped make my life easier. Hopefully my sharing some of these ideas will make your wedding planning easier, too!

One suggestion they made that we decided to incorporate for Kelly and James’ wedding is the use of rental items. Usually it makes more sense to buy (you do that with real estate, right?) … but we’re talking weddings. Why buy when you can rent? We loved the idea of tea lights gracing each individual reception table, so we chose to rent the holders and candles from The Castle. No muss, no fuss, and best of all, no need to worry about what to do with all those glass holders once the wedding is over and the candles are snuffed out. We will have five tea lights circling silver and glass candelabras that will be centered on elegant mirrored tiles (all of which are available for rent). I purchased colored glass beads called “diamond confetti” from the Gift Shop and they’ll be sprinkled on the tables for a touch of color. Adding elegant purple linen napkins and organza chair sashes we’re renting from a linen company will enhance the ambiance and the beautiful architecture of The Castle.

Another item we’ve decided to rent is a decorative card box for wedding guests with envelopes they wish to gift to the bride and groom. The Castle has a variety of different card boxes to choose from. I went down to the Wedding Office and looked them over in person, but it’s easy to check them out on-line. Simply visit The Castle’s website, click on “Wedding and Receptions”, then into “Special Touches”. You’ll find each card box is different. If you’re planning the event around a certain theme (Cinderella, Castle, Sparkle Galore or Simple Elegance), you can’t go wrong.

Last, but not least, let’s talk flowers. As in renting hanging baskets of floral arrangements to decorate the aisle down which Kelly and James will walk as husband and wife. The Castle has numerous large hanging baskets that can be used in the large stone arches of the various courtyards. We haven’t decided yet if we’ll use those and/or the decorative wrought iron stands with ornate embellishments that will compliment the small hanging baskets we’re renting from our florist. So many choices and decisions! The date is getting closer but we can still think about the various options.

Another day, another blog, another idea. Stay tuned!

Do It Yourself (“DIY”) Weddings!

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Today’s brides are on the cutting edge and getting more and more creative when it comes to tying the latest DIY trend into their Castle weddings. We’ve seen brides be extremely flexible with the DIY theme. Sometimes it covers just a few wedding details; other times, it carries throughout the entire wedding, including centerpieces, bouquets and boutonnieres, guest books, cake décor and card boxes. A DIY wedding has several benefits, too. First, it allows you to drastically cut wedding costs by creating your own décor … plus, you know exactly what you’re getting right from the start. While a DIY wedding may take some time (and lots of creative thinking!), the inconvenience can’t compare to the satisfaction of knowing your wedding will look exactly how you’ve envisioned it.

Here are some examples of wedding decor we’ve seen from Castle brides and grooms who took advantage of the DIY trend to make their wedding as unique and creative as they are!

A Castle Wedding in the Making - Entry 3: She Said Yes to the Dress!

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Hi there! Peggy popping in again with some exciting news: Kelly said YES to the dress!

If you’ve been following my posts, you know that my daughter Kelly and her fabulous fiancé James are planning a Castle Farms wedding on June 30th. Since Kelly lives far away on the west coast while I’m in Charlevoix and work at Castle Farms, much of the planning for their destination wedding has happily fallen on my shoulders. And even though the wedding is taking place here in Kelly’s hometown, I must admit I’ve been feeling a little sad and left out. You see, Kelly is my only daughter. From the time she was a little girl, I’ve looked forward to helping her choose a wedding gown. But with Kelly in Seattle and me in Michigan, a mother/daughter shopping excursion wasn’t easy to arrange. What’s a Mother-Of-The-Bride to do?

Kelly started off alone on her quest for the dress by visiting a few bridal shops in Seattle. We chatted frequently on the phone. She knew from the start that she wanted something simple, with not a lot of beading or lace. Kelly is a modern young woman with a great sense of style who knows what she likes… but she wasn’t finding it. The more she shopped, the more frustrated she sounded whenever we talked on the phone, and the worse I felt. You know how mothers are… when your daughter needs you, you want to help! Luckily, since we’d all been invited to a family wedding in San Francisco, we made plans to spend part of a day exploring bridal boutiques. My husband Dennis and I flew out to California, and Kelly flew down from Seattle. When the three of us met up, off we all went (including my sisters! How fun! A true family affair!) in search of the perfect wedding gown.

Turns out, finding it wasn’t so easy. I had a vision of Kelly in an elegant long gown. Our daughter, however, had her eye out for something simple and stylish, like a classy cocktail-length dress. Kelly had made arrangements for us to visit two bridal salons while in San Francisco. The first, which sold only samples, literally had thousands of dresses to choose from, all arranged by style. Kelly tried on numerous dresses: some short (her choice), some long. I’m sure she tired of us oohing and aahing every time she donned yet another long sweeping gown, but it was hard to resist since we all thought Kelly looked so beautiful! Finally she tried on a dress with a detachable skirt which would allow her to walk down the aisle on her father’s arm in a long gown that trailed behind her so elegant and chic; the dress then could be converted for the reception into a shorter version so she’d easily be able to dance the night away without the cumbersome weight and length to deal with. Kelly tried on both styles. The dress was swingy, it was fun, but most of all, it was pure-Kelly. We kept the other appointment at the second bridal salon and Kelly tried on a number of dresses, but her heart kept returning to that one special dress she’d seen. Dennis and I confirmed what she already knew: the first dress in the first store offered the best of both worlds. We quickly offered to buy it. Still, Kelly thought it was ridiculous to spend so much money on a dress she would only wear one day in her life. She left San Francisco without a dress.

Once Kelly was back in Seattle, she visited a few more bridal shops just to be sure (what bride doesn’t do that?). That’s when she realized she’d already found the dress of her heart. So, Kelly, smart young woman that she is, went online and discovered the exact identical dress on sale at a much more reasonable price than in the San Francisco store. Later that week when she phoned, Dennis and I could hear the excitement in our daughter’s voice. She’d debated over whether to order the dress in satin or chiffon, but ultimately Kelly decided that satin was more elegant and definitely more bridal. The dress was ordered and arrived in Seattle with no mishaps. She also ordered her shoes online (which she loves, by the way!). She’s been wearing them around the house to make sure they’re comfortable for her wedding day. Meanwhile, Dennis and I had an opportunity to see the dress when we visited Seattle at Christmas. I don’t want to give away too many of the details as her fiancé James might be reading this blog and we want him surprised on the big day. So, let me end by putting it this way: when Kelly finally said YES to the dress, Dennis and I were just as thrilled to say YES to her dress, too!

Meet Seth & Sara: Our Newest Castle Couple!

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Choosing a destination wedding in Northern Michigan was an easy choice for our newest Castle couple, Seth and Sara. Since the two of them used Northern Michigan as a halfway point in their long-distance relationship for six years, the up-north magic provided by Northern Michigan made it an easy choice when it came to picking a location to celebrate their marriage.

saraseth-535

Sara & Seth’s winter wedding was breathtakingly beautiful, with the collaboration of Castle staff & preferred vendors. Reverend Ken Grimes officiated the ceremony (despite weather-related mishaps!), and guests were treated to a delicious dinner and scrumptious cake from Grey Gables Inn Restaurant & Catering. Exquisite floral bouquets and décor provided by A Touch of Spring  graced the ceremony site and reception hall. Photography by Darrell Christie Photography captured every moment, making Seth and Sara’s Castle Wedding a day to be long remembered by both the couple and their guests.
