Do It Yourself (“DIY”) Weddings!

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Today’s brides are on the cutting edge and getting more and more creative when it comes to tying the latest DIY trend into their Castle weddings. We’ve seen brides be extremely flexible with the DIY theme. Sometimes it covers just a few wedding details; other times, it carries throughout the entire wedding, including centerpieces, bouquets and boutonnieres, guest books, cake décor and card boxes. A DIY wedding has several benefits, too. First, it allows you to drastically cut wedding costs by creating your own décor … plus, you know exactly what you’re getting right from the start. While a DIY wedding may take some time (and lots of creative thinking!), the inconvenience can’t compare to the satisfaction of knowing your wedding will look exactly how you’ve envisioned it.

Here are some examples of wedding decor we’ve seen from Castle brides and grooms who took advantage of the DIY trend to make their wedding as unique and creative as they are!

A Castle Wedding in the Making - Entry 3: She Said Yes to the Dress!

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Hi there! Peggy popping in again with some exciting news: Kelly said YES to the dress!

If you’ve been following my posts, you know that my daughter Kelly and her fabulous fiancé James are planning a Castle Farms wedding on June 30th. Since Kelly lives far away on the west coast while I’m in Charlevoix and work at Castle Farms, much of the planning for their destination wedding has happily fallen on my shoulders. And even though the wedding is taking place here in Kelly’s hometown, I must admit I’ve been feeling a little sad and left out. You see, Kelly is my only daughter. From the time she was a little girl, I’ve looked forward to helping her choose a wedding gown. But with Kelly in Seattle and me in Michigan, a mother/daughter shopping excursion wasn’t easy to arrange. What’s a Mother-Of-The-Bride to do?

Kelly started off alone on her quest for the dress by visiting a few bridal shops in Seattle. We chatted frequently on the phone. She knew from the start that she wanted something simple, with not a lot of beading or lace. Kelly is a modern young woman with a great sense of style who knows what she likes… but she wasn’t finding it. The more she shopped, the more frustrated she sounded whenever we talked on the phone, and the worse I felt. You know how mothers are… when your daughter needs you, you want to help! Luckily, since we’d all been invited to a family wedding in San Francisco, we made plans to spend part of a day exploring bridal boutiques. My husband Dennis and I flew out to California, and Kelly flew down from Seattle. When the three of us met up, off we all went (including my sisters! How fun! A true family affair!) in search of the perfect wedding gown.

Turns out, finding it wasn’t so easy. I had a vision of Kelly in an elegant long gown. Our daughter, however, had her eye out for something simple and stylish, like a classy cocktail-length dress. Kelly had made arrangements for us to visit two bridal salons while in San Francisco. The first, which sold only samples, literally had thousands of dresses to choose from, all arranged by style. Kelly tried on numerous dresses: some short (her choice), some long. I’m sure she tired of us oohing and aahing every time she donned yet another long sweeping gown, but it was hard to resist since we all thought Kelly looked so beautiful! Finally she tried on a dress with a detachable skirt which would allow her to walk down the aisle on her father’s arm in a long gown that trailed behind her so elegant and chic; the dress then could be converted for the reception into a shorter version so she’d easily be able to dance the night away without the cumbersome weight and length to deal with. Kelly tried on both styles. The dress was swingy, it was fun, but most of all, it was pure-Kelly. We kept the other appointment at the second bridal salon and Kelly tried on a number of dresses, but her heart kept returning to that one special dress she’d seen. Dennis and I confirmed what she already knew: the first dress in the first store offered the best of both worlds. We quickly offered to buy it. Still, Kelly thought it was ridiculous to spend so much money on a dress she would only wear one day in her life. She left San Francisco without a dress.

Once Kelly was back in Seattle, she visited a few more bridal shops just to be sure (what bride doesn’t do that?). That’s when she realized she’d already found the dress of her heart. So, Kelly, smart young woman that she is, went online and discovered the exact identical dress on sale at a much more reasonable price than in the San Francisco store. Later that week when she phoned, Dennis and I could hear the excitement in our daughter’s voice. She’d debated over whether to order the dress in satin or chiffon, but ultimately Kelly decided that satin was more elegant and definitely more bridal. The dress was ordered and arrived in Seattle with no mishaps. She also ordered her shoes online (which she loves, by the way!). She’s been wearing them around the house to make sure they’re comfortable for her wedding day. Meanwhile, Dennis and I had an opportunity to see the dress when we visited Seattle at Christmas. I don’t want to give away too many of the details as her fiancé James might be reading this blog and we want him surprised on the big day. So, let me end by putting it this way: when Kelly finally said YES to the dress, Dennis and I were just as thrilled to say YES to her dress, too!

A Castle Wedding in the Making: Entry 2 - The Wedding Invites

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Hi there! Peggy here again, popping in with another idea we’ve decided to use for Kelly’s wedding. As I told you last time, Kelly and her amazing fiancé James are being married at Castle Farms on June 30th. Since they both live in Seattle, it will be a destination wedding, and not everyone will be able to attend. Since we don’t want anyone feeling left out, Kelly and James came up with the perfect solution: celebrate twice with two wedding receptions! The first will be immediately following the wedding at Castle Farms in Charlevoix, and the other, a few months later, will be held in Seattle.

But while double wedding receptions sound like lots of fun, it also caused a dilemma: How to handle the invitation plus include RSVP cards for two separate receptions in two different locations for the same bridal couple? We’re all familiar with wedding invitations which include an “RSVP” card inviting guests to the ceremony and reception afterward … but what about the second reception? Naturally all our wedding guests will be invited to attend both events but not everyone will. We came up with a solution, and went to the printer and he helped to make it happen. I think Kelly and James’ wedding invitations came out perfect! The finished design is a tri-fold creamy invitation done up in purple prose edged with an elegant line of satin. The wedding ceremony and Charlevoix reception are listed at the top, the middle section contains information on the Seattle event, and the bottom third has a perforated edge for people to RSVP for the Michigan event. A separate RSVP card for the Seattle festivities was printed and will be tucked inside the regular invitation so that all our wedding guests will receive invitations on the ceremony and both reception details.

With the Castle wedding and Charlevoix reception now only four months away, it’s great to know that we solved the problem of far-off family and friends who might feel bad not being able to attend the Michigan event. Now we can all celebrate together a few months later in Seattle!

Pancakes, Panache and Personality!

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

More and more couples today are turning away from conventional wedding traditions to add a touch of fun, flair and their unique personalities into their ceremonies and receptions. This past weekend at Castle Farms, we saw just that!

For their wedding vows, Angela and James chose to do something completely unorthodox and certainly untraditional. Writing your own vows is nothing new, but Angela and James wrote theirs modeled in the style of Dr. Seuss. Tim, their ceremony officiant, asked Angela to affirm a set of rhyming promises; she’d repeat the rhyme, sometimes adding an extra line or two to make it even more fun. Then James would follow, repeating the rhyme and confirming his vows. As their rhymes continued, Angela and James built on the previous vows, repeating each one as yet another vow was added. It definitely made for a ceremony that Angela, James and their guests will remember for a lifetime!

Angela and James’ unique wedding carried straight into the reception, where guests entered a whimsically transformed King’s Great Hall to find blue and white balloons lining the ceiling. Rather than cheese and crackers, smoked salmon puffs or crudités, the appetizer table was filled with desserts. Dinner was even more of a surprise: guests were treated to flying pancakes! Chris Cakes of Michigan (the record-holding pancake company) catered the dinner. Wedding guests were instructed to stand still and hold their plates steady as pancakes were tossed for them to catch. A “Pancake Fixins” station offered guests the chance to enter a pancake-decorating competition. Photos were taken of each creation, posted to a board and judged on their originality. It made for a truly fun untraditional reception that was inspired by Angela and James’ personalities. Guaranteed everyone will be talking about this wedding and reception for years to come!

A Castle Wedding In The Making: Entry 1 - Planning Our After-Wedding Brunch

Monday, February 20th, 2012

My daughter Kelly is getting married at The Castle on Saturday, June 30th , and we couldn’t be more excited! Though she lives in Seattle (where she met and fell in love with her fiancé, James a wonderful man), Kelly grew up in Charlevoix. And when it came time to start planning her wedding, there were no other options. Kelly wanted to come home and to be married in Charlevoix … here at Castle Farms. I was thrilled! Not only am I lucky enough to be Mother of The Bride, I work at Castle Farms as Gift Shop and Tour Director.

During the next few months, I’ll be sharing details about Kelly’s upcoming wedding. The big day itself is June 30th (yes, I know, still some months away), but I’m already excited and nervous. There’s so much to do, and so many details —especially when you’re dealing with a destination wedding. Many of our family and friends will be travelling to Charlevoix from all over the country, and we want each to know how much we appreciate them taking time to celebrate with us as Kelly and James exchange vows. The Venue Coordinators here at The Castle and the vendors from Castle Farms’ Preferred Service Providers list have all been wonderful in offering helpful hints. One idea my husband Dennis and I particularly liked is hosting a “Day-After-The-Wedding Brunch” for our out-of-town guests. We wanted to give them a nice send-off before they depart, and we couldn’t think of a better place to do so than in The Queen’s Tavern here at The Castle. The Tavern is a quiet intimate spot that holds up to 60 people … perfect for relaxing together one more time and sharing lots of laughter and memories from Kelly and James’ wedding with our families and friends before they begin their long journey home.

The Queen's Tavern makes the perfect setting for an after-wedding brunch or rehearsal dinner.

Check one more thing off my list. And now The Queen’s Tavern is booked for the “Day-After-The-Wedding-Brunch”, I found that even setting the menu was easy working with the expertise and ideas that the caterer offered. Meanwhile, I’ll be popping in from time to time to share more ideas as they occur to me. Stay tuned!

Who Says Black Is Your Only Option?!

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Along with other wedding trends, the option of a groom wearing a tux is also something that’s quickly changing. Nowadays, the conventional black and white tux is often exchanged for something matching the groom’s personal style, colors used, or even the wedding theme —be it a casual summer-day wedding, or extravagant, elegant ceremony. Either way, there are lots of options now available besides the original tuxedo. It just goes to show that the groom should wear whatever makes him feel like he’s at his best for his beautiful bride!

For this summer wedding in the Queen’s Courtyard (since renovated), the groom and his groomsmen chose tan suits for a more casual feel. They looked great with the bride and bridesmaids!
